Thirteen

Ravi had taken an appointment with Arvind’s parents who had agreed to see him at their office. It was conveniently located in a commercial complex, two kilometres away from the Supreme Court where they practised. The building was high-end and posh-looking, with offices and some showrooms, in which the Agarwals owned a huge five thousand square feet area on the second floor. The interiors were tastefully done up and the office itself was divided into many cabins. When Ravi reached there, the whole place was buzzing with the clicking of computers and the humming of printers in an air-conditioned ambience. The Agarwals were both criminal lawyers of some standing, but they also had some lawyers in their office practising other branches of law.

They were waiting in their cabin, which was pretty opulent by any standards. Ravi went forward and shook hands with Mr Agarwal and greeted Mrs Agarwal, who were both sitting across a large, dark mahogany table with files piled high on both sides and an open laptop before Mr Agarwal.

‘I'm DCP Ravi Sharma,’ he introduced himself. ‘I am here to ask you a few questions regarding your daughter-in-law Rupali’s recent accident and death.’

‘We have already given our statements to the police,’ Agarwal said curtly with his hands folded in his lap. He seemed to be in a defiant mood.

But Ravi was in the mood to extract information, and his voice was firm, ‘Sir, I've taken over the case now, and if you don't mind I'd like to ask you a few questions.’

Agarwal was not very tall, but he was broad and athletic and exuded a certain power that perhaps came with his position as a renowned lawyer. He was dressed in a well-tailored suit that nearly succeeded in camouflaging his expanding waistline. But even the best tailor in town could not hide the obvious plumpness of Mrs Agarwal, who looked very uncomfortable in her pantsuit and shoes.

It was not often that Ravi felt intimidated, but this was definitely one of those moments when he felt dwarfed by Agarwal’s sheer personality. He knew he was up against someone who would not give up easily. This man would probably try everything from legal tangles to bribes to get his way.

‘Mr Agarwal, you know why I'm here, so without any preamble let me tell you what I want. I need to know about your relations with your son Arvind, by yours I mean both of you, and with your late daughter-in-law. I also want to know if you have any knowledge of how she died and what exactly happened.’

The lawyer put his hands on the table with the fingers splayed and leaned forward. Ravi did not fail to notice that almost all the ten fingers had rings on them with different coloured stones. He mistrusted men who wore many rings—to him it was a sign of an insecure person prone to visiting astrologers and soothsayers. Such men could be dangerous.

‘DCP Sharma, I know your reputation. You don't beat around the bush, so I will not waste your time.
